F# minor: Key Signature, Scale and Chords

Circle of fifths with F# minor (3 ♯): chords of the key highlighted on the wheel

F# minor has 3 ♯ (F#, C#, G#) in its key signature.

The F# minor scale is: F# G# A B C# D E F#.

The diatonic chords are F#m (i), G#dim (ii°), A (III), Bm (iv), C#m (v), D (VI) and E (VII). The main functions are F#m (tonic), Bm (subdominant) and C#m (dominant).

In harmonic minor the 7th degree is raised (E#); this turns the dominant into the major chord C#.

The relative major is A major. In the circle of fifths, B minor (a fifth lower) and C# minor (a fifth higher) sit right next to F# minor.

Haydn's "Farewell" Symphony (No. 45) is in F# minor. On the guitar the F#m chord is a barre shape.
