A minor: Key Signature, Scale and Chords

Circle of fifths with A minor (no sharps or flats): chords of the key highlighted on the wheel

A minor has no sharps or flats.

The A minor scale is: A B C D E F G A.

The diatonic chords are Am (i), Bdim (ii°), C (III), Dm (iv), Em (v), F (VI) and G (VII). The main functions are Am (tonic), Dm (subdominant) and Em (dominant).

In harmonic minor the 7th degree is raised (G#); this turns the dominant into the major chord E.

The relative major is C major. In the circle of fifths, D minor (a fifth lower) and E minor (a fifth higher) sit right next to A minor.

A minor needs no sharps or flats in its key signature and is therefore an easy minor key to start with. Beethoven's "Für Elise" is in A minor.
