D major: Key Signature, Scale and Chords

Circle of fifths with D major (2 ♯): chords of the key highlighted on the wheel

D major has 2 ♯ (F#, C#) in its key signature.

The D major scale is: D E F# G A B C# D.

The diatonic chords are D (I), Em (ii), F#m (iii), G (IV), A (V), Bm (vi) and C#dim (vii°). The main functions are D (tonic), G (subdominant) and A (dominant).

The relative minor is B minor. In the circle of fifths, G major (a fifth lower) and A major (a fifth higher) sit right next to D major.

D major sits well on string instruments such as the violin, because the open strings D and A resonate, and it is also common on the guitar. Pachelbel's Canon is in D major.
