Bb minor: Key Signature, Scale and Chords

Circle of fifths with Bb minor (5 ♭): chords of the key highlighted on the wheel

Bb minor has 5 ♭ (Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb) in its key signature.

The Bb minor scale is: Bb C Db Eb F Gb Ab Bb.

The diatonic chords are Bbm (i), Cdim (ii°), Db (III), Ebm (iv), Fm (v), Gb (VI) and Ab (VII). The main functions are Bbm (tonic), Ebm (subdominant) and Fm (dominant).

In harmonic minor the 7th degree is raised (A); this turns the dominant into the major chord F.

The relative major is Db major. In the circle of fifths, Eb minor (a fifth lower) and F minor (a fifth higher) sit right next to Bb minor.

Chopin's Piano Sonata No. 2 with the famous "Funeral March" is in Bb minor, as is Tchaikovsky's first piano concerto.
