E minor: Key Signature, Scale and Chords

Circle of fifths with E minor (1 ♯): chords of the key highlighted on the wheel

E minor has 1 ♯ (F#) in its key signature.

The E minor scale is: E F# G A B C D E.

The diatonic chords are Em (i), F#dim (ii°), G (III), Am (iv), Bm (v), C (VI) and D (VII). The main functions are Em (tonic), Am (subdominant) and Bm (dominant).

In harmonic minor the 7th degree is raised (D#); this turns the dominant into the major chord B.

The relative major is G major. In the circle of fifths, A minor (a fifth lower) and B minor (a fifth higher) sit right next to E minor.

E minor is especially easy on the guitar because the Em chord needs only two fingers. Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 "From the New World" is in E minor.
