G minor: Key Signature, Scale and Chords

Circle of fifths with G minor (2 ♭): chords of the key highlighted on the wheel

G minor has 2 ♭ (Bb, Eb) in its key signature.

The G minor scale is: G A Bb C D Eb F G.

The diatonic chords are Gm (i), Adim (ii°), Bb (III), Cm (iv), Dm (v), Eb (VI) and F (VII). The main functions are Gm (tonic), Cm (subdominant) and Dm (dominant).

In harmonic minor the 7th degree is raised (F#); this turns the dominant into the major chord D.

The relative major is Bb major. In the circle of fifths, C minor (a fifth lower) and D minor (a fifth higher) sit right next to G minor.

Mozart's Symphony No. 40 (K. 550) is in G minor, as is Bach's "Little" Fugue (BWV 578).
