F major: Key Signature, Scale and Chords

Circle of fifths with F major (1 ♭): chords of the key highlighted on the wheel

F major has 1 ♭ (Bb) in its key signature.

The F major scale is: F G A Bb C D E F.

The diatonic chords are F (I), Gm (ii), Am (iii), Bb (IV), C (V), Dm (vi) and Edim (vii°). The main functions are F (tonic), Bb (subdominant) and C (dominant).

The relative minor is D minor. In the circle of fifths, Bb major (a fifth lower) and C major (a fifth higher) sit right next to F major.

On the guitar the full F major chord is often played as a barre chord and is therefore a hurdle for beginners. Beethoven's Symphony No. 6, the "Pastoral", is in F major.
